There are people who enter your life all at once.
And then there are people who quietly become impossible to imagine life without.
.
Julian first noticed Megan at school in 2015.
At first, there was only familiarity. Passing conversations. Shared spaces. Soccer games. Time spent after school.
.
Then came Kairos.
.
For the first time, they had the opportunity to know each other beyond classrooms and passing conversations. The retreat brought them closer than either expected. Conversations became easier. Trust came naturally. Before long, they found themselves talking about everything and nothing at all. They became best friends.
.
By the spring of 2019, Julian arrived at the opening night of CJ’s production of Cinderella, carrying flowers and a question he had been building the courage to ask.
Megan said yes.
.
For a time, their story felt simple.
Then came college.
.
Like so many eighteen-year-olds standing at the edge of adulthood, they believed practicality should win. They told themselves they would enjoy the summer and go their separate ways when Megan left for Saint Louis.
The plan made sense.
.
They left for college believing they had made the right decision. Megan headed to Saint Louis University, and Julian began his freshman year at the University of Dayton. Though they didn’t stay in touch, Julian never stopped thinking about Megan. When he heard she was home for fall break, he took a chance and asked if she would meet him. One conversation was all it took for both of them to realize that time and distance hadn’t changed how they felt about each other. Julian asked Megan if they could give their relationship another chance.
.
Megan, knowing what four years of distance would demand, made him wait.
.
Weeks later, he asked again.
.
And for the next four years, love looked less like grand gestures and more like commitment.
.
It looked like six-hour drives.
It looked like FaceTime calls at the end of long days.
It looked like counting down the days until the next visit.
It looked like choosing each other over and over again.
.
When Megan graduated in 2023, there was no dramatic beginning waiting on the other side.
There was simply life. And somehow, that was even better.
.
Over the years, they became part of each other’s families. Holidays were shared. Traditions were borrowed and blended. Celebrations and losses were experienced side by side.
.
Their home filled with music. With dogs. With laughter. With road trips, concerts, movie nights, and all of the ordinary moments that often become the most meaningful when viewed in hindsight.
.
In October of 2025, Julian proposed in the Smoky Mountains.
.
And yet, it wasn’t the moment that made them feel committed to one another. That feeling had arrived years earlier in the countless moments that came before.
.
By the time they stand together on September 18, 2027, Megan and Julian will have known each other for nearly twelve years and loved each other for more than eight.
.
Long enough to watch each other grow up.
Long enough to build a life that already feels like family.
Long enough that home is no longer a place.
It’s a person.
.
And after all these years, they still feel incredibly lucky that they found it in each other.
